Winterizing Your Vehicle

This winter, don’t fall victim to untimely car problems — get ahead of the game by ensuring that your vehicle is ready to take on the harsher weather. While some of these checks can be done quickly on your own, others will require the expertise of a seasoned mechanic or technician. The honest professionals at Bock Auto are at your service for any of your winterizing needs.

Battery Power

To ensure that your car battery doesn’t give out at the worst of times, check its condition early in the season. If your battery is showing low power, charge or replace it as necessary. It is also imperative to inspect your battery cables and terminals, which should be free from corrosion and able to maintain tight connections. If you need your battery tested, stop by and see us!

Tire Pressure and Tread

Especially in the Northeast, it is crucial to have adequate tires with the correct pressure and tread. Normal tires will fare well against light to moderate snow, but to combat heavy snowfall, install snow tires on all four wheels. It is also a good idea to regularly check the amount of tread that your tires have. If they show anything less than 3/32 inches of tread, it’s time to replace your tires. Uneven wear could be an indicator of alignment, suspension of balance issues. At Bock Auto we will happily service all of your tire needs.

Oil and Oil Filter

Changing the oil and oil filter in your vehicle is an integral part of seasonal car care. Most mechanics say that an oil change is customary every 5,000-7,000 miles, or every 3-5 months. In the cold winter months, your engine takes longer to warm up. Cold, thick oil doesn’t lubricate as well. It is important that your vehicle’s oil be the right viscosity for the temperature conditions. If you’re unsure if you have the correct oil in your vehicle, it’s time to schedule an oil service with us!

Windshield Wipers and Fluid

Further prepare for the colder weather by installing the correct size windshield wipers. If your current wipers do not clear the entire windshield or leave streaks or spots, they should be replaced. You can also opt for winter wiper blades which include a rubber boot to minimize ice and snow build-up.  One of our qualified mechanics will gladly install or replace your vehicle’s wipers. Additionally, they will top off your windshield wiper fluid with a winter cleaning solution that has antifreeze components.

Engine Coolant and Antifreeze

Last but not least, check the coolant in your overflow tank. If levels are low, be sure to bring your vehicle in to have your coolant level topped off with the correct type and ratio of antifreeze/water to prevent freezing in low temperatures. It is always best to leave any fluid testing or mixing to the experts. Call us today for a complete maintenance check!
